Aegis Pediatric Recovery Center
The American Burn Association estimates that of the 480,000 serious burn injuries each year, children 16 and younger represent over 26% of hospital and burn center admissions (ABA, 2018).
For young children, the discomfort from their medical condition alone can be enough to send them into a panic, but add a large, new envrionment filled with caretakers that aren't a familiar parent, and it can be an extremely overwhelming experience. This analysis proposes an alternative: a micro-hospital for pediatric burn victims, with 12 patient and family rooms on site, and a smaller, more comfortable environment where children can get the proper care they need without the fear of a city hospital.
Located near UCSF's Medical Center in the heart of Mission Bay, San Francisco, this proposed site is surrounded by 3 international airports for global patient access. The Pediatric Burn Care Center is nestled in a prime location, with close proximity to some of the city's newest park renovations and views to the San Francisco Bay. If they're up early enough, patients might also be able to catch the sunrise over the waters. For additional medical aid, only a few blocks down is the University of California, San Francisco's Medical Center and Children's Hospital.
In 2024 alone, wildfires have burned through over 1,220 structures and 830,000 acres of forests, towns, and diverse wildlife habitats in the state of California (Cal Fire, 2024). With record-breaking temperatures, longer drought periods, and high winds, it's safe to say that the residents of California are no stranger to the damages caused by flames. This center will represent hope in San Francisco to a new generation of children, who will no longer be afraid, but encouraged to help others who might share their same experience.
